Geomorphology Field Trip

On Monday 17th October Year 8 had embarked on a trip to Epping Forest Field Centre. We got in the minibus and headed out. After 20 minutes we had reached our destination. Our tutor, Hannah, greeted us and took us through to the classroom.

She went through some safety procedures and handed us some sheets. On the sheets there were maps that showed the whole of Epping Forest, and some that were close ups of the particular part we were in.

We then went to see the different heights of the hill we were on. At the first level we stopped and Hannah told us we were on some gravel/sand kind of material, which was called pebble gravel. We then went down hill towards the second level, a clay kind of material, which was called clay gate beds.

We returned to the classroom, got into groups and were given our equipment. We headed further into the forest crossing a busy road safely without slips or trips and plodded along to the first site. Due to no rainfall, all of the sites had no water so most of us were disappointed but our parents weren’t!

We were shown how to measure the depth and width of the banks. It was easier when we got the hand of things and the group I was in were first, twice. Overall the trip was a great success and a wonderful experience.
