They experience lessons, co-curricular activities, visitors and educational visits related to the three performing arts. These experiences culminate in performances in assemblies, shows, concerts and other events. Performing from an early age gives our pupils the self-confidence that we aspire to in our Mission Statement.
Music
The Music Department is set in a purpose built Performing Arts Centre and comprises one main music classroom, one smaller room, three practice rooms, an office and a Performance Hall.
There are three members of teaching staff who work on a full time and part time basis, together with 15 freelance instrumental teachers who visit the department at various times throughout the week.
Our aim is to provide a musical education that is firstly, available to all pupils and not just the musically elite; secondly, challenging for all; thirdly, reflective of a multicultural society and finally encourages pupils’ enthusiasm and enjoyment of music.
Peripatetic instrumental staff delivering individual instrumental lessons, a plethora of co-curricular music activities, our Music Awards Scheme, music based visits, concerts and partnerships with local senior schools all add to the wider musical education on offer at St. Aubyn’s.

Dance
Dance is included within the PE curriculum for Years 3, 4 and 5. The aim is to introduce pupils to a different form of exercise and fitness regime. The syllabus introduces pupils to elements of dance, including choreography which is theme based and pupil led. This culminates in a Year 5 production during the Lent term.
There is also the opportunity for pupils throughout the School to take part in dance classes for other productions.
Ballet is offered as a co-curricular activity from Reception through to Year 6 with classes held on a weekly basis after school. The classes are delivered by an external ballet teacher, Mrs Dawn Wenn-Kober.
Drama
Performing in public is a thrilling experience and something which really helps children’s confidence grow. Drama is an important part of the all-round educational experience we provide and pupils are encouraged to take part in performances from an early age. This may be as part of a class assembly or as a character in one of the numerous productions which take place over the course of the year. These range from simple nativities in the Early Years Foundation Stage to musical productions in Upper Prep.
Drama forms part of the pupils’ literacy curriculum and we are supported in the delivery of drama skills by visiting actors and theatre groups. The purpose-built Drama and Dance Studio and the Performing Arts Centre allow for productions of the highest calibre.
