Y7 Science Trip - Chatham Docks

We had an early start and got to school for 7:15am. The journey was surprisingly swift through the Blackwall tunnel and soon we were heading towards the docks for our ‘Deadly Forces’ science trip.

The first thing we undertook was a practical experiment to investigate the ratios of mixtures and how varying quantities can effect a chemical reaction. Our aim was to make a chemical reaction powerful enough to fire a ball bearing out of a cannon towards a target. We used citric acid and bicarbonate of soda to create our reaction with the winning team of Oliver, Maya and George working on a 1.5:1 ratio.

We then changed location to discuss hull shapes and forces before seeing a demonstration of hull shapes in their wave tank.   The class then separated into groups to begin a game of building their own boat using a variety of materials.  Each team was given a budget of ninety pounds to buy essentials like motors and propellers for the boat and briefed that they would be tested for speed and load carrying capacity.  The various designs had mixed outcomes with Rodi opting for a submersible design.

Lunch was followed by a tour of a submarine, the H.M.S Ocelo, and a quick look around the docks. The submarine was very cramped and it was a tight squeeze.   The day was very enjoyable and a fun way to learn about science.
